Matthias Kretschmer

Born in 1980 in Austria. Graduate of the Advertising Academy Vienna. Although not the classical art career, but the interest in art and painting has always been a driving force or a fixed financial pillar in the young student years. After 10 years in marketing (conception, illustration, art direction) the decision was made in 2014 to pursue the occupation / vocation of the freelance artist from the hobby art. Numerous exhibition in Austria and neighboring countries. Matthias Kretschmer created the first "spoon paintings“ in 2015, the approach, style and visual appearance are completely new and innovative in the art scene. The uniqueness of the works quickly gained national and international prestige, exhibitions and participation in exhibitions in Austria, Hungary, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Great Britain, the USA and the Czech Republic and two international art awards followed within a short time. What began as an artistic experiment evolved into a unique trademark within two years.

The works of Matthias Kretschmer seem unusual, yet familiar. On the first look his works are showing a number of concentric circles, reduced to a minimum of colors, dominated by metallic colors, gloss, but also rust and copper oxide. At second glance, the first messages and metaphors reveal themselves, the circles are composed of a multitude of individual elements. They are just usual, purely functional utensils that have found their way from the original environment to the canvas. The circle as dominating element is not chosen randomly, it stands like no other symbol for the duality of man, the collective and the society. It is a metaphor for unity and cohesion, as well as for rigidity and seclusion. Kretschmer‘s works should raise specific questions and give no answer, they should, yes, they must inspire the viewer to find their own interpretation and interpretation. Each work contains a wealth of metaphors and hidden messages, the circle alone is just the most obvious statement of the artist. Each image consists of a large number of small elements, mostly spoons and forks are used. They are everyday objects that are familiar to any observer, but their use in large numbers and in concentric arrangement is unusual. The little fork, the little spoon stands metaphorically for an individual, alone it is inconspicuous, interchangeable. In the collective it is firmly in place, it is suddenly part of something new, big. The circles can symbolize strength and perfection, in some works, however, these are also broken, the rigidity of the complete work is symbolically criticized and infiltrated. The circle is as strong as its weakest segment, either it withstands the pressure or it gives way to it. The 2018 series again uses LED technology, focusing not on the entire color palette of light, but on the reproduction of the element of fire. The optical simulation of flickering flames lends the works an inner soul, the LEDs embedded under the surface radiate optically warm light. The light penetrates from the inside to the surface, the "flames“ make the circles of cutlery pulsate, the statics disappear, the room dives into a pleasant, flickering light, the pictures catch fire, so to speak, and come to life
